Overview

This professional development programme is designed for experienced educators across primary and secondary settings who are looking to deepen, refine and embed effective autism-specific practice within their schools.

Grounded in current research and shaped by autistic lived experience, this collaborative programme supports participants to strengthen their understanding of autism and develop practical, evidence-informed approaches that improve outcomes for autistic pupils.

Using an enquiry-based professional learning model, participants will explore inclusive classroom strategies, engage in collaborative problem-solving, and consider how autism-specific approaches can be implemented sustainably within their own settings. The programme is focused on developing realistic, impactful practices that enhance inclusive learning environments and can be shared with colleagues across the wider school community.

Participants will also develop resources, techniques and approaches that can be cascaded to other staff, supporting whole-school development and the growth of professional enquiry groups.

Course Content

Welcome and Introductory Session

The programme will begin with a face-to-face introductory session on 6 November, providing an opportunity for participants to connect with colleagues, explore current challenges and priorities, and identify key areas of focus. Delegate insights and "hot topics" will help shape the direction of the Learning Community, ensuring the programme is relevant, collaborative and responsive to participants' needs.

Online Learning Sessions

Following the introductory session, participants will take part in four interactive online sessions from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, providing dedicated time for reflection, discussion, collaborative problem-solving and the exploration of evidence-informed autism-specific practice.

Session dates:

  • 19 November 2026
  • 4 February 2027
  • 4 March 2027
  • 6 May 2027

Together, these sessions will support participants to develop, implement and evaluate approaches within their own settings, while learning alongside a network of peers committed to improving outcomes for autistic pupils.

By the end of the programme, participants will:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of autism through research and lived experience perspectives
  • Explore and apply evidence-informed, autism-specific strategies
  • Increase confidence in supporting autistic pupils
  • Strengthen inclusive practice across their setting
